Divided into Big Sheets and Little Sheets and with the Preguiças River in the middle, the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park has a larger area than the city of São Paulo, 155 thousand hectares. It is huge. It was created in 1981 to facilitate the preservation of its ecosystems. Thousands of freshwater dunes and lagoons are fueled by heavy rainfall that falls from January to June - rainy season. The rainiest months are March, April and May. In June, July, August and September the lagoons have their maximum water supply. Some of them are up to five meters deep and two kilometers long. It is the best time to visit the region. After that they gradually dry up until the next rainy season comes, when they are reborn.
