海芋可分為濕地型和陸生型兩大類，濕地型海芋也就是我們較為常見的白色海芋，另外有一種綠色海芋則是白色海芋的一個品種，品種名叫做「綠女神」。至於陸生型海芋則以黃色海芋和紅色海芋為代表，它們和一般植物一樣生長在排水良好的陸地上。近幾年來，市面上可以看到許多顏色鮮豔亮麗的彩色海芋，有黃、紅、橙、紫紅等顏色，就是以黃色海芋和紅色海芋為親本的園藝品種群。
