Church of Sao Francisco, aerial view, Porto
Portugal

This S.Francisco Convent started in 1245. The land where it was built, known as Redondela, was offered by a devout Porto trader. It was here in Porto that the Franciscans experienced the most difficulties in building their monastery. The disputes on the part of the Bishop of Porto were tough, to the point that the Fransciscans accepted a proposal to leave Porto and found the Monastery on the side of Gaia. The Papal Bull of Innocent V in 1224 ordered Miragaia's place to be restored for them. It was rebuilt between 1383 and 1410, in a Gothic mendicant style: Three naves, with a prominent cross, although smaller than the central nave and chancel lower than the transept. Polygonal headboard chapels, general wooden structure coverage. The Franciscan temple has a public character, opening its doors to all social and political events. D. João I chose to stay here during the wedding with Filipa de Lencastre in Leça do Balio. In the 15th and 16th centuries, some families chose this church as their pantheon. During the centuries. XVII and XVIII the interior was completely covered with gilded carving, and its high choir was built. In 1833, at the end of the siege of Porto, a fire destroyed the cloister, and partially the church. The façade was rebuilt, being only the rosette of the original temple.
