Peneda Geres National Park, Lindoso, Granaries, aerial view
Portugal

The granaries would have existed before the introduction of corn with the discovery of the Americas. In the century. XIII the medieval castle is built, integrated in Terra da Nóbrega, under the administration and control of Aboim da Nóbrega Castle.

The granaries arise from the need to dry and store corn. Corn, originating in South America, introduced in ´sec. XVI and with strong expansion from the following century, it is a high-yield alternative to rainfed cereals. It is collected on the cob and comprises a period of prior drying by exposure to the sun, before storage. The ears are then placed in a kind of ventilated chamber, with high walls torn by cracks, supported by columns, surmounted by protruding stones. The millstones, which lift them from the ground and protect them from rodents. With a gable roof, in granite slabs, they are adorned with some decorative elements such as crosses, pinnacles, sundials etc.
