Peneda-Geres National Park, Serra Amarela, Germil, Houses2
Portugal

A majestic valley marked by vine terraces, demonstrates the skillful domain of man in that place, flanked by native vegetation where oaks and chestnut trees are distinguished. At the top, the village of Germil at the height of 600 meters, embedded in the small terraces and which constitutes a typical example of a village with a mountainous habitat. Germil is a typical mountain village located on one of the many ridges of the Serra Amarela, in the heart of the Peneda Gerês National Park (PNPG) and just 15 kilometers from the county seat, Ponte da Barca.

The altitude (which varies between four hundred and eight hundred meters) marked Germil as being one of those places of difficult access, isolated and facing itself. The village is made up of only two population settlements and, as you would expect, has suffered over the years from an evil that has affected the whole country for decades: unrestrained emigration. For this reason, subsistence agriculture, combined with extensive grazing, made Germil a self-sustaining and isolated village. With the granite stone dominating most of the buildings, the visitor can observe different aspects of community life. Very old, are some of the granite granaries near a church dating from 1880. An old watermill, once again witnesses the use of the forces of nature by man. The collection of ox carts pulled by barrosãs and rhythmic by the clinking of the clocks, shows that another day of work is ending. Chickens and chicks roam the corners of the village. The small road that continues inside the village takes us to the municipality of Terras de Bouro. A small grove of oak and chestnut trees just outside Germil awaits us for a little rest before we return.
