The decommissioned Fawley Power Station, Nr. Calshot

The oil-fired Fawley Power Station was located on the western side of Southampton Water, near Calshot. After more than 40 years operation it was decommissioned in 2013. The 164 metre high chimney was a famous landmark that could be seen for miles around and was often used as a navigational aid for sailors in the Solent. It was felled by explosives in 2021 with demolition of the entire site being completed in 2023.

The futuristic-looking control room, resembling a flying saucer, was once acclaimed as a prime example of brutalist architecture. Its unusual design has seen it used several times as a TV and film location. These include 'Solo: A Star Wars Story', 'Mission Impossible 5: Rogue Nation', and an episode of the BBC sci-fi comedy 'Red Dwarf'.

The site was cleared for the construction of a new town but the project was postponed in 2024.
