Mojave Desert, Government Holes dug in 1859 by teamsters employed by Phineas Banning. Originally named Banning's Well it was renamed a year later when US solders enlarged it. Even though the plural "holes" is used, there in only one well there.
Countless early travelers made use of this well, but the most significant phase was the use for cattle operations.
There was also a gunfighters shootout here at an old cabin in 1925 where two men, Matt Burts and J. W. Robinson killed each other.
