St. Antoniuskapelle
Switzerland

The chapel was built on the edge of a mountain path in 1692 and is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, (also Saint Anthony of Lisbon). It is located at St. Antoniweg 4, Saas-Balen, Switzerland. The tower and roof are made of slate, it has an open bell tower with a wooden buttress similar to the towers of 17th century churches in the municipality of Goms. The interior of the chapel is completely white. The main altar, in gilded carving, has a statue of Saint Anthony with the book and the Baby Jesus in his arms. The side altar on the right is dedicated to the Holy Family, on the left, the rosary altar features an image of the Virgin Mary with 15 emblems representing the Mysteries of the Rosary. The altars were created a few years after the construction of the chapel and are possibly the work of Johann Ritz (1668-1729), father of the famous altar builder Johann Jost Ritz. The chapel has been restored several times. In 1830, religious services in the chapel were prohibited due to the risk of collapse. In 1838 the ruined chapel was renovated. Further major renovations took place in 1926 and 1957. 1982 – 1984 the chapel underwent a complete and successful renovation under the leadership of Kilchherr Josef Zimmermann, Saas-Grund. On June 13th, the population of the Saas valley gathers for the feast of St. Anthony of Padua/Lisbon in the chapel to celebrate mass together.
