Comme beaucoup de quartiers excentrés de Saint Pierre, le quartier de Basse Terre était principalement destiné à la production agricole, principalement du manioc, de la canne et de la vanille. C'est dans ce quartier que fut construit en 1927 le canal Saint Etienne qui est à l'origine de la prospérité de la Capitale du Sud.
Aujourd'hui Basse Terre est devenu un quartier populaire principalement à vocation résidentielle. Il conserve cependant un cachet assez original avec ses rues étroites et sinueuses.
As a lot of outlying neighborhoods of Saint-Pierre, the neighborhood of Basse Terre was principally intended for the agricultural production, manioc, sugar cane and vanilla. It is in this neighborhood that was constructed in 1927 the canal Saint-Etienne that is at the origin of the prosperity of the Capital of the South. Today, Basse Terre became a popular neighborhood of mainly residential vocation. Nevertheless it preserves a quite original character with its narrow and sinuous streets.
