Vila Vicosa, Ducal Palace, Dining Room
Portugal

This large dining room was built by Queen D. Maria I at the end of the 18th century, since before there was no space with this specific function. The five shutters lead to a balcony-terrace facing the garden, whose box also dates from the same period. The ceiling is covered with canvas painted with mythological motifs, showing Neptune.

Two large armored tapestries, by Aubusson, narrate episodes from Alexandre's Life. The French dressers of the 18th century, decorated with magnificent golden bronzes, are signed by Mondon; flank them done in Tavira. On the floor, arranged on the tops of the room, Caucasian handwoven rugs.

The aquariums and straws in blue Chinese porcelain with reserves are from the reign of Qianlong (1723-1795) on the comfortable terrines of the Companhia das Indias.

The golden bronze table surtout arranged on the table is signed Thomire à Paris and was purchased by D. Maria Pia for Real Paço do Porto. In the displays placed along the south wall, there are some of the best ceramic pieces. The wooden faience exhibits Portuguese faience from the 17th to the 19th centuries. In the glass showcases, of the largest set in Portugal of Italian majolica from the 16th to the 18th centuries, the following are noteworthy: "istoriatos", gomil and lavender dishes with brutish "albarelli" or bowl with fruits.
